Is this a paper knife or a letter opener? Good question. The paper knife was not intended for opening letters, as the name suggests it was used for paper. Not any old paper either, paper knives evolved for cutting the leaves of books.
‘Peace on the High Ground’ is an impressive sculpture, depicting a majestic wild mountain ram. It’s immortalised here standing at 23cm high - a little lower than it’s traditional Rocky Mountain habitat - and crafted in exquisite detail in just over 1387g of sterling silver.
As silversmiths we usually focus on the metal in our masterworks. However, it has always been part of London’s artisan community to find stone cutters, enamellers, box, silk and ribbon makers that are as much a part of the history of gold and silver working as the silversmiths themselves.
Perhaps forever is a little exaggeration, but typically silverware lasts for generations. We regularly work on restoring items that might be hundreds of years old.
