The Albany Viper x Tusk

The Albany viper, also known as the Albany adder, is a species of dwarf adder facing significant threats to its survival. These highly venomous snakes are found in a small area of South Africa’s Coega Bontveld habitat, which consists of dense thicket and shrubs. Unfortunately, this unique environment is being destroyed by strip-mining in order to create limestone pavement. Additionally, Albany adders are at risk of poaching for the pet trade, which further endangers their population.

Protecting these snakes is a complicated challenge, especially since a lot of the land they inhabit is privately owned. (In South Africa, more than 80% of land that is home to threatened species is privately owned.) Through initiatives like Biodiversity Stewardship, conservation organisations like Tusk are working with landowners to set aside and protect crucial habitats. This collaborative approach may help areas vital to the survival of the Albany adder are preserved for future generations.

For over thirty years, Tusk has been at the forefront of conservation in Africa. Their innovative and strategic approach has led to significant progress in protecting over 70 millions hectares of land and more than 40 threatened species. By partnering with local organisations and empowering communities, Tusk is addressing the root causes of wildlife threads, including poaching and habitat loss.
