At Grant Macdonald London, we’re dedicated to the art of balancing innovation with traditional craftsmanship. Our journey began in 1961 when our founder, Grant Macdonald, started learning the craft of silversmithing at the age of 14. Though he jokes about not being born with a silver spoon, he quickly learned to create his own, laying the foundation for what would become a legacy of exceptional craftsmanship.
A Legacy Rooted in Tradition
Grant Macdonald honed his skills by restoring antique silver pieces and creating various silver items for retailers in the 1960s. His first workshop, established under the name Silverform in Palmers Green, became renowned for its high standards of design and workmanship. By 1966, Grant was taking commissions from City of London Livery Companies, known for their demand for perfection in ceremonial pieces.
The move to Clerkenwell in 1971 marked a significant milestone. The new workshops became a hub of bespoke silverware production, catering to the luxurious demands of Bond Street and Mayfair retailers. Even during the economic downturn of the late 1970s, Grant Macdonald's work found international acclaim, from Cartier’s boutique in New York to prestigious retailers in Hong Kong.
Innovation: Embracing the Future
The 1980s and 1990s were transformative decades. As the silversmithing industry faced changing tastes, Grant Macdonald expanded his reach internationally. Notably, in 1998, we were honoured to remake the golden orb and cross for the Dresden Cathedral, symbolising reconciliation and peace.
The new millennium brought technological advancements that would shape the future of our craft. In 2003, Grant’s son George joined the business, bringing with him a vision for integrating cutting-edge design technologies like 3D printing with traditional silversmithing techniques. This blend of old and new has become the hallmark of our design philosophy.
Master Craftsmanship Meets Modern Design
Under the leadership of master craftsman Mark Broughton, every piece we produce is a testament to the finest traditions of the silversmith’s craft. Each creation, from a simple spoon to a museum masterpiece, reflects the talents of exceptional craftsmen and a reputation for innovation spanning over half a century.
Our commitment to modern design is evident in our pioneering use of 3D printing. This technology allows us to realise complex and intricate designs that were previously unimaginable. By combining advanced design techniques with the age-old skills of our silversmiths, we create pieces that are both contemporary and timeless.
A Philosophy of Luxury and Legacy
Today, with Grant Macdonald as our creative director and George Macdonald as managing director, we continue to uphold the high standards of perfection in design, quality, and service. Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that fine precious metals should be cherished and used by today’s owners and future generations. This commitment to luxury and legacy is what drives us to produce only the highest quality silverware, earning a reputation worthy of London’s storied history in precious metalsmithing.
