How a Bespoke Commission Moves from Idea to Finished Silver Object

Every bespoke commission begins with a conversation.

This conversation might start with a clear vision. A trophy for an annual awards ceremony, a set of champagne flutes for a wedding, or a ceremonial gift for a visiting dignitary. Often it begins with something far less defined: a feeling, a story, or simply the desire to create something exceptional. In either case, the journey from idea to finished silver object is one of collaboration, craftsmanship, and careful refinement.

The first stage is understanding the brief.

This is where the purpose of the piece is explored in detail. Who is it for? Where will it be displayed or used? These questions help shape the direction of the design, ensuring the final object feels appropriate to its setting. For corporate commissions, this might involve incorporating brand heritage or symbolism. For private clients, it may centre around personal milestones or family traditions.

From here, the process moves into concept design.

Initial sketches are developed to give form to the idea. These drawings help you visualise the piece for the first time, and at this stage, the design is still flexible, so we can make adjustments to ensure every detail aligns with your vision.

Once a direction is agreed, our design team will use 3D modelling to give you and our craftsmen a more precise understanding of scale and structure. Complex forms can be tested digitally, ensuring balance and practicality before production begins. It’s here that traditional craftsmanship and contemporary technology meet, allowing us to walk the line between creativity and accuracy.

With the design finalised, the commission enters the workshop.

This is where the object begins to take physical form through a combination of traditional techniques and advanced processes. Depending on the design, elements may be cast, raised, or fabricated by hand. Our world-class silversmiths shape, solder and refine each component, bringing the piece to life with meticulous attention to detail.

Surface decoration follows, using techniques passed down through the generations to add depth and character to the object. At this stage, engraved inscriptions are carefully applied, ensuring they sit harmoniously within the overall design. We’ll also hallmark the piece, guaranteeing the purity of the precious metal and providing a lasting record of authenticity.

Finally, the piece undergoes finishing and presentation. The silver is polished to its desired finish, whether that’s high shine or satin, and the object is carefully inspected to ensure it meets the highest standards. At this point, the commission is complete, and is ready to be presented, used, or displayed.

What began as an idea has become something tangible.

A bespoke silver object carries with it not only the skill of its makers, but the intention behind its creation. In this way, the process itself becomes part of the value. Each stage, from initial conversation to final polish, contributes to an object that is designed to be passed on.
