Every commission at Grant Macdonald London begins with an idea. Often, it’s more than a design - it’s a gesture, a story, or a moment to mark. Whether we’re working on a bespoke diplomatic gift, a silver centrepiece, or a one-of-a-kind trophy, the process always starts with a conversation.
We take time to understand what matters to each client. What’s the occasion? What message should the piece carry? These early discussions guide our design team as they begin shaping the concept - translating thoughts into sketches, CAD renders, and physical models. It’s a collaborative process, where creativity is balanced with function, and where technical knowledge informs every design decision.
All of this happens in our London studio, where our silversmiths and goldsmiths work side by side with designers and engravers. Many of our craftspeople have trained for decades, with skills passed down through generations. They use traditional tools and techniques - raising, soldering, chasing, engraving - alongside modern technology like 3D printing and rapid prototyping. We don’t use new tools for the sake of it; we use them where they enhance accuracy, efficiency or design integrity.
Once a design is approved, the piece is made from scratch in precious metal. Every surface is carefully formed and refined by hand, whether it’s a seamless curve in silver or a detailed pattern in gold. Engraving is often the final step, adding personal details - coats of arms, inscriptions, or decorative flourishes. Finally, the piece is polished, hallmarked by the London Assay Office, and presented to the client.
Throughout the process, we take care to ensure each piece meets not only our standards for quality, but also for sustainability. We use responsibly sourced materials and aim to make thoughtful decisions around packaging and production. These details matter - not just for the integrity of the finished object, but for its long-term value.
While no two commissions are the same, the journey from concept to creation always reflects the same principles: clarity, collaboration, and craftsmanship. Clients are welcome to be as involved in the process as they like - some enjoy regular updates and visits to the studio, while others prefer to leave the details in our hands.
In the end, our work is about more than making beautiful things. It’s about creating something that holds meaning - something that will last, be appreciated, and perhaps even passed down. That’s what we aim for in every project: a piece that feels personal, considered and expertly made.
If you’re considering a bespoke piece - whether for a private occasion, an official commission or a professional milestone - we’d be delighted to help bring it to life. Please get in touch with our team to begin a conversation.
