As Wimbledon 2025 holds the world’s attention, there’s no denying the power of the moment a trophy is finally raised. It represents more than a victory - it’s the culmination of years of dedication. At Grant Macdonald London, we’re proud to play a part in those moments - and when a client comes to us with a bespoke commission for a trophy, we’re happy to craft a timeless piece that will help them honour excellence, in whatever form it takes.
For over fifty years, we’ve worked with sporting bodies, government departments and global organisations to turn silver into stories. Our trophies, diplomatic gifts and commemorative objects have been presented to leaders, elite athletes and industry greats across the world - but each one was designed and handmade here in our London workshop.
Of course, there are few sporting trophies as iconic as the Gentlemen’s Singles Trophy at Wimbledon - a sterling silver gilt masterpiece first awarded in 1887. Standing at 18.5 inches tall, engraved with the inspiration “The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Champion of the World”, it’s a symbol of tradition and triumph, with a design that’s remained virtually unchanged for over a century - classical, with ornate handles and a pineapple finial. Unlike many modern sporting trophies, the original is still in the club’s care - and each champion receives a beautifully crafted replica.
We’re often asked what makes a trophy truly special. The answer, in our opinion, is care. That’s why every commission begins with a conversation, where you’ll sit down with our designers to explore your vision through a creative consultation. Whether you’re marking a championship, a centenary or a personal milestone, our team is trained to translate your brief into concept artwork, followed by a tailor-made production schedule. From there, our master craftsmen will bring the design to life using time-honoured techniques passed down through the generations alongside cutting-edge technology to achieve designs that wouldn’t have been possible a decade or so ago.
In the 1980s, we achieved an industry first in the creation of the Qatar Tennis Open Trophies, by adapting a 60W laser to cut silver and gold, which was previously considered nearly impossible (and impractical) due to the highly reflective nature of precious metals.
One of the earliest examples of a trophy being created in our workshop remains close to our hearts. In 1970, Mr Everard N Goodman approached Grant Macdonald with a simple but meaningful request: to create a trophy for the annual ‘Parents vs Boys’ cricket and football match at Carmel College, Oxfordshire. What emerged from our workshop was the Goodman Trophy - a striking piece hand-fabricated from sterling silver, finished with 24ct gold plating, and set on a rich rosewood base.
It made its debut in October of that year. The football match ended in a draw, but the boys took the win in cricket. More than fifty years on, the Goodman Trophy still reflects what we value most: craft, meaning, and legacy. As Grant Macdonald himself once said, “Silver and precious metals, unlike other luxury items, go on forever. That’s incredibly powerful.”
That philosophy continues to guide our work today. Whether we’re designing a centrepiece for an international tournament or a one-of-a-kind memento for a corporate milestone, we know that the object must live up to the occasion. It’s not just about the materials (though we insist on the very finest). It’s about storytelling, symbolism, and creating something worthy of the person who receives it.
So, as champions rise this summer and the world watches them triumph, know that we are doing what we can to craft the pieces that help those moments live on.
